4 Rodney Place, Clifton, BRISTOL, BS8 4HY
The Rodney is a Georgian townhouse hotel in refined Clifton village, a little to the east of the Avon. In addition to its main dining room, it also offers this comfortably appointed bistro room overlooking a walled garden. With exposed stone walls, quirky pictures and a light-fixture that looks like a collection of jam jars, it makes an inspired setting for utterly straightforward bistro food that delivers plenty of punch. Start with toasted goats' cheese served with beetroot purée, walnuts and apple jelly, or smoked salmon with fennel salad and pineapple-chilli chutney. Mains might offer seasonal game such as pheasant with puréed cauliflower, salt-baked beetroot and sautéed spinach, or cod with sweet potatoes and bacon in balsamic vinaigrette. Gooseberry crunch cheesecake makes a change, or there could be classic pear frangipane tart with apple syrup and cream. Make up a party of twenty or more, and a barbecue menu is yours for the asking.
