4 Rodney Place, Clifton, BRISTOL, BS8 4HY
With its ever-changing backdrop of local artworks, No. 4 is situated in the smart Rodney Hotel, a spiffing Georgian townhouse in Clifton. The restaurant is a relaxed and unpretentious space, with huge sash windows, ornate ceilings and oak floorboards, and the promise of a table in the secluded garden when the weather allows. There's a decidedly bistro feel to the place, and on the menu, too, where the choice changes daily and the seasons are respected. Start with goats' cheese on thyme crostini with beetroot purée, for example, or crispy duck leg with steamed bok choy and orange. Next up, go for whole grilled plaice, or seasonal vegetable risotto with parmesan and pesto, and for dessert, gooseberry and toffee crunch tart, or summer berry Eton Mess. Side dishes such as hand-cut chips and glazed Chantenay carrots bump up the prices a little.
