Berwick Lodge

Berwick Drive, Henbury, BRISTOL, BS10 7TD

2 rosettes

The Victorian gent who built this manor house back in the 1890s picked a good spot close to Bristol. Surrounded by 18 acres of gardens and woodland, its boutique restaurant, Hattua, was named after a Bronze Age World Heritage site in Turkey. The kitchen turns out creative modern dishes which look impressive on the plate - lots of scattered flowers and micro-herbs. A meltingly tender piece of duck liver arrives with punchy rhubarb to cut through the delicious richness of the meat, plus some spicy ginger bread, and main-course cod comes in the trendy company of tender pork cheek. There's a tasting menu if you fancy the culinary works.
