Marygreen Manor Hotel

London Road, BRENTWOOD, CM14 4NR

1 rosettes

Dating from the early 16th century, when it was built by a courtier of Catherine of Aragon, the manor is a perfect example of a half-timbered building, with its restaurant an impressive-looking room with its profusion of oak wall and ceiling timbers and carved stanchions. Classy ingredients are carefully handled by a kitchen that combines them sympathetically to create some stimulating dishes. Start with veal sweetbreads with onions, spinach, rhubarb and radish, or lobster with leeks, ceps and lobster foam, before grilled Dover sole with beurre noisette and capers, or beef fillet with cauliflower purée, mushrooms and pak choi. Vegetarians have a separate menu, and desserts have included banana pudding with caramel fudge sauce and vanilla ice cream, or raspberry and chocolate tart.
