If ever there was a case for not judging a book by its cover, this unassuming Indian is it. Devotees of Indian cuisine will find much to love about Mrs Kaushy Patel's take on the vegetarian traditions of South India and the Gujarat and Punjab regions. An all-in-one thali meal is a phenomenally good value way to get to grips with the riveting new flavours of her repertoire, starting with pethi - spiced coconut deep-fried in a fluffy potato casing - before a light curry of courgette and yellow 'channa dal' lentils, or a more fiery Bombay bataka - tomato-based potato curry aflame with chillis, garam masala and cumin.
