Clogs and a billycock hat were the favourite attire of an early 20th-century landlord, when this was the Bay Horse Inn. Now one of top chef Nigel Haworth's Ribble Valley Inns, its plain facade gives way to a larger, more modern interior than you might expect, not least in the purple-upholstered dining areas. Pub classics sit alongside more inventive dishes, such as a starter of twice-baked Leagram's organic cheese soufflé is served with a cheese sauce and topped by a quenelle of beetroot relish. Mains include roast pan-fried hake fillet with Shetland mussel broth, scallions and samphire. End with simnel Bakewell tart with blood orange cream.
