20 Highfield Road, Edgbaston, BIRMINGHAM, B15 3DU

3 rosettes

Once a private house in leafy Edgbaston, chef-patron Andreas Antona's elegant restaurant with rooms has been at the forefront of Birmingham's gastronomic resurgence since 2004. The white Georgian house was extensively refurbished in 2015 to extend the main dining area and the conservatory extension overlooks the landscaped garden, which offers plenty of alfresco dining opportunities in the warmer months. Directing the day-to-day action in the kitchen is Nathan Eades, whose confident cooking delivers dishes displaying a high degree of finesse, an unwavering eye for detail and pin-sharp technical skills, all founded on the best ingredients available on the day. Crispy duck egg arrives with lentils, bacon, cep and chestnut, or you might start with cured trout teamed with buttermilk, pickled cucumber and smoked rye bread. Next up, ox cheek cooked in hay could be accompanied by onion purée, pearl barley, grapes and watercress. If you're up for fish, try the halibut with carrots, gingerbread, shrimps, buttermilk espuma and dill oil. Presentation remains impeccable through to a closing quince tarte Tatin with lemon thyme ice cream. As well as the carte and set-price lunch, there's a seven-course tasting menu with a veggie version and optional wine flight.
