Lasan Restaurant

3-4 Dakota Buildings, James Street, St Paul's Square, BIRMINGHAM, B3 1SD

1 rosettes

Lasan is a Premier League contender in the new order of Brum's contemporary Indians. It has the de rigueur postcode in the trendy Jewellery Quarter, and minimal good looks in its expansive split-level layout - in fact, there's nothing obvious to suggest this is an Indian restaurant except for a sitar on the wall and ethnic background music. The vibe is up-tempo and high-decibel, but the service team are on the case, while the kitchen brigade hails from all corners of the sub-continent to ensure pukka regional authenticity. What arrives on the plate is contemporary fusion thinking applied to top-class raw materials. Goan mackerel recheado is pan-fried fillets spiced with chilli and garlic, served with fresh cucumber and mooli salad, while Wiltshire Downs lamb is showcased in lamb lababdar, a trio of marinated cutlet, 10-hour confit shoulder, and braised shin pattie pointed up with spicy lentils and smoked bone marrow jus spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon.
