New Oxford House, 16 Waterloo Street, BIRMINGHAM, B2 5UG

3 rosettes

Adam and Nathasha Stokes moved their restaurant to a deliciously revamped premises around the corner from the original in early 2016. It's now spread over three floors, with a swanky bar at the front, a contemporary dining area, and large, funky kitchen (if you're into kitchens - in which case you might want to book the chef's table). Adam's cooking is confident and creative and he handles contemporary cooking techniques with a deft touch, maintaining the integrity of the ingredients at all times. Via a fixed-price carte, tasting menu, and midweek lunch option, the kitchen turns out the likes of an impressively simple starter of purple sprouting broccoli, charred shallots and brown shrimps, with an ace béarnaise sauce on the side. Among main courses, a skilfully cooked piece of halibut arrives with celeriac, hazelnuts and crisp shards of air-dried ham, and, off the tasting menu, hare stars in a dish flavoured with Minus 8 vinegar and chocolate. Among desserts, sticky toffee pudding gets an extra dimension from its accompanying smoked lemon syrup. Everything from wonderful breads - served in a bespoke wooden box - to creative amuse bouche such as beetroot and goats' cheese macaroons demonstrates attention to detail. One the city's best restaurants is even more exciting than before.
