36-40 Howard Street, BELFAST, NI, BT1 6PF
As well as EIPIC, restaurateur Michael Deane owns a chain of notable restaurants around the city (Deanes Meat Locker, Deanes Love Fish, Deanes Deli Bistro & Vin Café, Deanes At Queens and Deane & Decano), providing something that will appeal to all sectors of the community. This one is a high-flying sort of place, with a predominantly grey decor, upholstered dining chairs at clothed tables, heavy drapes at the windows and spotlights in the ceiling. Danni Barry heads up the stoves and she's the driving force behind some exciting, progressive cooking built on fresh local produce. Her set-price menus are sensibly short and to the point, opening with something straightforward like onion tart, or smoked haddock with parsley and potatoes. There's nothing too showy or highfalutin about the cooking, so flavours are clear and precise: BBQ pork fillet with cabbage, turnips and pickled mustard seeds, or haunch of venison with cocoa, Jerusalem artichoke and pickled cabbage. Accurate technique is a hallmark, seen notably in fish main courses, among them perhaps grilled monkfish with a meaty though delicate sauce based on a reduction of roast bones, accompanied by celeriac and leeks. To finish, poached rhubarb is imaginatively partnered by sweet cheese and pink peppercorns, or there might be rhubarb and buttermilk yogurt..
