Marlborough Tavern

35 Marlborough Buildings, BATH, BA1 2LY

2 rosettes

This straight-talking foodie pub has a pleasingly unstuffy vibe and local ales and ciders on tap. Fare could be as simple as home-made burgers or fish and chips, or at the more gastro end, a five-course tasting menu with matching wines. The latter sets out with beetroot matched with goats' cheese pannacotta, poached fig and toasted walnut, progressing via scallops with confit pork belly, celeriac purée and hazelnut butter. Next comes a main course of tarragon and mustard-crusted Red Ruby beef fillet with creamy smoked garlic mash, wild mushrooms, crispy shallot rings and port and thyme jus. Finish with toffee apple cake with salted caramel and cider brandy ice cream.
