Marine Drive, BARTON-ON-SEA, BH25 7DZ
The place to be seen in Barton is this modern clifftop venue overlooking The Needles and the sea, where a local in-crowd packs the spacious terrace with its broadly parasoled tables on warmer days. Upbeat modern brasserie cooking is the drill, incorporating plenty of super-fresh fish, such as scallops with shredded parsnips and curried apple purée, followed by John Dory with broccoli gratin and almond tapenade, or brill roasted with garlic and thyme. Meats might encompass slow-cooked leg of lamb in Provençal herbs, tomato and garlic, or chargrilled calf's liver and bacon with mash and onion gravy, and proceedings end with the likes of chocolate shortbread tart spiked with lime zest, served with mango sorbet and a riot of superfluous sauces. The menu helpfully suggests a different sweet wine as accompaniment to each dessert. If you want to enjoy that panorama a little longer you can book a room with a view and stay overnight.
