Restaurant Coworth Park

Blacknest Road, ASCOT, SL5 7SE

Just outside Ascot, and with Her Maj as a neighbour in Windsor Great Park, Coworth Park does five-star English country house glamour with knobs on. And that's hardly surprising when you consider that this is the aristocratic country cousin to the West End's glitzy Dorchester Hotel. There are 240 acres of lush Berkshire countryside wrapped around the elegant 17th-century manor house, with the Coworth Park Equestrian Centre handy for a quick game of polo, or you might recharge the batteries in the eco-friendly spa. Food-wise, you're spoilt for choice: the modish Spatisserie located in the spa (geddit?) serves healthy options and scrummy cakes, the converted oak and stone barn is the spot for bistro-dining (The Barn - see entry), the swish Drawing Room in the main house does all-day dining and afternoon tea, a swanky bar with a terrace overlooks the croquet lawn and sunken gardens, and then there's the fine-dining option, The Restaurant, a series of elegant Georgian rooms done out in muted browns and greens, with a centrepiece artwork of shimmering leaves and twigs dominating the ceiling, curvy toffee-hued leather seats and impeccably dressed tables. Head chef Brian Hughson, a veteran of stellar kitchens in London, has recently moved out from The Grill at The Dorchester to drive this high-end operation. Although rooted in classical thinking, the cooking is glossy, contemporary and full of invention. Soused Cornish mackerel with smoked mussels, fennel crisps and crumb, samphire and curry cream balances out into a satisfying whole, while an equally accomplished main course comprising loin of rose veal topped with melted Comté cheese is matched with crispy sweetbread, English truffle granola and shallot purée. Finally, rhubarb stars in a dessert of crumble, sorbet, parfait and crisps with almond cassonade and rosemary custard.
