Passage Road, ARLINGHAM, GL2 7JR
On the bank of the River Severn, The Old Passage is a white-painted restaurant with rooms. The kitchen's focus is on seafood, with choices like wild turbot fillet counterbalanced by oxtail, served with braised pak choi, celeriac purée and girolles or hake with saffron and tarragon butter, potato, fennel and tomato. Lobster comes natural, grilled or thermidor, and starters range from fish soup with the usual trimmings to seared scallops interestingly served with crispy pork terrine, apple purée and rum-soaked raisins. A meaty main might be roast breast and confit leg of pheasant with vegetables and puddings could be raspberry mousse with raspberry and champagne jelly and white chocolate sorbet.
