Waterhead Hotel

Lake Road, AMBLESIDE, LA22 0ER

1 rosettes

The Waterhead is a townhouse hotel near Ambleside, so named for its strategic siting on the northern edge of Lake Windermere. It hardly needs saying that the surrounding countryside is breathtaking in its quiet majesty, and the hotel is a good place to stay for those on the Lakeland cultural trail. Wordsworth lived nearby, and don't forget Beatrix Potter, readings of whose works are thoughtfully piped into the lavatories for you. Don't get too engrossed in there, though, or you might miss the vibrant brasserie dining going on in the modernist Bar and Grill, with its blue glassware and purple-lit ceiling. Start with a meaty sharing platter of barbecue ribs, chipolata and fell-bred beef carpaccio, or something like sticky-toffee duck leg with wilted greens. Mains might offer a whole poussin with Cumbrian pancetta in red wine jus, or herbed lemon sole in smoked salmon butter, and then there's Grasmere gingerbread cheesecake to finish.
