The Anchor Inn

Lower Froyle, ALTON, GU34 4NA

2 rosettes

Dating back to the 16th century, The Anchor is a picturesque country inn in Lower Froyle, close to Alton. Open fireplaces and low beams are what to expect, plus a slate of smart bedrooms all named after war poets. Classical furnishings spruce up the restaurant, where pictures recalling the history of this country take pride of place. This is country pursuit territory, so you might work up an appetite with a bit of fly fishing and shooting before cosying up for some impressive British (ish) food. Local, seasonal ingredients crop up on the menu which incorporates some Italian influences and balances the flavours very well indeed. You might start with haricot beans on toast with chorizo, rocket and parmesan, then move on to Ryland lamb loin with roast beetroot and mash, flageolet bean and lamb shoulder crumble, and finish with sticky date pudding with fudge sauce and clotted cream.
