The Anchor Inn

Lower Froyle, ALTON, GU34 4NA

2 rosettes

The Anchor, dating from the 16th century, has all the elements of a traditional country inn down to its low beams, walls full of pictures and press cuttings, wooden tables and a double-sided bar. It's a popular place, attracting people not just for drinks in the bar but with a wide-ranging menu assembled by a kitchen that clearly has high levels of culinary skill and integrity. Pub stalwarts of sausage and mash are on the menu, but so too is an excellent rack of lamb, served pink in its own juices, with crispy breaded shoulder, pea purée and pommes Anna. Inventive treatments extend to a garlic and thyme sauce for pan-fried fillet of pollock, accompanied by mussels, clams and samphire, and starters of guinea fowl terrine with date and thyme purée, or a purée of avocado, chilli and lime for crab mayonnaise. Desserts are best-sellers, judging by the number on offer, among them pannacotta topped with crumbled nuts served with poached rhubarb.
