WOODBURY SALTERTON, EX5 1PQ
The Digger's Rest has been welcoming drinkers for more than 500 years. This pretty free house is just a few minutes' drive from the Exeter junction of the M5, and stands in the delightful east Devon village of Woodbury Salterton. Originally a cider house, its vintage can be identified from the thatched roof, thick stone and cob walls, heavy beams and log fire. These days, choice on the bar is much wider but real cider is still well represented by Westons and Symonds. Real ales feature Otter Ale from Devon with guest appearances of other West Country brews such as Exeter Avocet. Wine fans will appreciate the list created by the independent wine merchant, Tanners of Shrewsbury. The menus make the best of seasonal produce, with local sourcing playing a big role in freshness and quality control, and English and West Country organic produce used wherever possible. The kitchen is also committed to supporting farmers who practise good husbandry. Menus feature fish landed at Brixham and Looe, West Country beef hung for 21 days and pork from a farm just up the road. As well as the main menu there is a blackboard which features dishes created from prime cuts or rarer seasonal ingredients. Start perhaps with crispy whole camembert, seasonal chutney, crusty ciabatta, walnut and rocket salad; or smoked mackerel and dill fish cakes, lemon mayonnaise and crispy kale; before moving on to crispy Creedy Carver duck leg, Savoy cabbage and bacon, creamy mash and red wine jus; beer-battered cod fillet, chunky chips and garden peas; or potato and garlic gnocchi, tomato sauce, spinach, pesto and goats' cheese. It's worth timing a visit for the May beer and cider festival.
