Chequers Inn

Kiln Lane, WOOBURN COMMON, Beaconsfield, HP10 0JQ

The heart of this 17th-century coaching inn is still firmly rooted in the past, especially in the open-fired bar, where the hand-tooled oak beams and posts, and timeworn flagstone and wooden floors shrug off the passage of time. Contrast then the 21st-century chic lounge, with leather sofas and chairs, low tables and greenery while outside, sheltering the patio and flowery garden, stands a magnificent old oak tree. Beers are from Marlow's Rebellion and the St Austell breweries, and 14 wines are by the glass. In the bar, tempura prawns with chilli sauce; and lamb kofta are examples of small plates, with pan-fried calves' liver as a special. The two-AA Rosette restaurant menu features ever-changing dishes such as beef fillet with beef cheek ravioli, roasted baby onion jus and salsify; and hake with crushed new potatoes, baby artichokes and saffron butter sauce. Accommodation comprises 17 designer rooms.
