Buckhurst Park, WITHYHAM, Nr Hartfield, TN7 4BD
Licensed over 250 years ago, the pub was named after the heads of the local landowning family, the Dukes and Earls of Dorset. The centuries-old building is a jigsaw of styles, with slender chimney stacks, sharp gables, white weatherboarding and careworn tiles. The interior doesn't disappoint with its comfy period mix of flagstoned and oak-boarded floors, vast open fireplace and undulating beams. The Dorset Arms remains at heart a true village local, with darts, and good Sussex and Kent ales from Harvey's and Larkins; wines served by the glass include three sparklers. The kitchen's output is also a major draw, with eggs, sausages and organic beef sourced from the Buckhurst Estate. Starters include Scotch egg with mustard mayonnaise, then choose a main from the likes of chicken breast with tarragon cream sauce; or venison burger with blue cheese and pommes frites. Classic English puddings include spotted dick and custard.
