WITHYHAM, Nr Hartfield, TN7 4BD
Licensed some 200 years ago when it took the name of the local landowning family, once Earls of Dorset, this centuries-old building is a jigsaw of styles. Slender chimney stacks, sharp gables, white weatherboarding and careworn tiles are reminders of its vintage, whilst the interior doesn't disappoint with its comfy, period mix of flagstoned and oak-boarded floors, vast open fireplace and undulating beams. The Dorset Arms remains at heart a true village local, with darts, good Sussex ales from Harvey's and a vibrant community atmosphere. The produce of the kitchen is also a major draw, with a daily-changing specials board complementing the appealing carte menu. Starters include potted Cornish lobster and prawns; or Scotch egg with mustard mayonnaise. The main course options might be steak and kidney pudding or whole lemon sole with brown shrimps, samphire and frites. Tables on the green outside allow summertime alfresco dining.
