The Dorset Arms

WITHYHAM, Nr Hartfield, TN7 4BD

The picture-postcard perfection of this centuries-old building is a jigsaw of ages and styles - slender chimney stacks, sharp gables, gleaming white weatherboarding and careworn tiles. Licensed some 200 years ago when it took the name of the local landowning family, once Earls of Dorset, the interior doesn't disappoint, with a comfy, period mix of flagstoned and oak-boarded floors, vast open fireplace, undulating beams, and magpie furniture. It remains at heart a true village local, with darts, good Sussex ales from Harvey's and a vibrant community atmosphere. The produce of the kitchen is also a major draw, with an extensive, daily-changing specials board complementing the respectable carte menu. Starters include goats' cheese crostini; and whitebait with salad. The main course options might be Thai green chicken curry; chargrilled pork chops, wholegrain mustard mash and cider reduction; and beer battered skinless cod fillet and triple cooked hand-cut chips. All desserts are home-made. Tables on the green outside allow summertime alfresco dining.
