The Brown Horse Inn

The decor at this 1850s inn, in the beautiful and tranquil Winster Valley, has a subtly modern edge. It is virtually self-sufficient: vegetables and free-range meat come from the owners' surrounding land, and ales are brewed on site. The innovative cooking is a contemporary take on traditional fare and dinner could see a starter of grilled Bury black pudding, fried duck egg, powdered bacon and home-made brown sauce. Mains range from Lakes Blonde beer-battered cod, chips and pea purée to their gammon plate - grilled steak and pulled ham hock, slow-cooked egg, home-made chips and piccalilli and pineapple relish.
