The Wykeham Arms
75 Kingsgate Street,
WINCHESTER,
SO23 9PE
A fine 270-year-old brick building located in the oldest part of the city between the cathedral close and Winchester's famous college. Full of character and always buzzing with activity it draws an eclectic mix of customers, from businessmen and barristers, clergy and college Dons to tourists and local drinkers and diners. The rambling series of character bars and eating areas are furnished with old pine tables and old-fashioned college desks, and boast four welcoming winter log fires and an impressive collection of hats, fascinating pictures and military memorabilia adorn every available wall space. Follow a town or water meadow stroll with a satisfying lunch from the modern, seasonal menu, perhaps a minute steak and Barkham Blue rarebit sandwich, or duck leg with bean cassoulet and spiced tomato coulis. Evening choices extend to Hursley venison Wellington and chargrilled Manor Farm rib-eye steak with Bordelaise sauce, with bitter chocolate tart for pudding. Wash down with a cracking pint of London Pride, or one of 20 excellent wines by the glass.

This pub/hotel oozes with charm and is a fantastic location alongside the famous Winchester School. The highlight though was the amazing food that is on a par with a high end restaurant. Lots of locally sourced ingredients and clearly an extremely talented chef. The ambience and service were excellent and I would recommend the Wykeham Arms highly.

Visted Wykeham twice. The first time would have rated a 5 with its fabulous ambiance, great food and service. Sadly, second visit service was not good; was seated before an adjoining table who were served first; told had to wait for bread until chef had got our order, seemed strange rule. Food however was/is divine and the school desks quirkly wonderful.
