The White Swan

Main Street, WIGHILL, LS24 8BQ

If you fish, shoot, forage or grow veg, swap it here for a pint or a meal. That's the promise at this appealing village pub that even rears its own pigs, or Wiglets, as they call them here in Wighill. Tall stools line the corner bar in the Snug, which stocks a real ale named after the pub, as well as Black Sheep, Moorhouse's and Timothy Taylor Landlord. Cosy, in a country-pub way, the restaurant was once used for filming Catherine Zeta-Jones in TV's Darling Buds of May. Today it's the location for enjoying cherrywood-smoked salmon salad; braised shin of beef and ale suet-crust pie; and home-made cider and tarragon-battered haddock, chips and smashed peas. Not only vegetarians will opt for Malaysian pumpkin, chickpea and coconut curry. 'On your bike bites!' - for cyclists, you understand - include American pancakes with smoked bacon, and scrambled eggs on toast. Outside is an old telephone box, now the pub's library.
