Top Lane, WHITLEY, Melksham, SN12 8QX
This wisteria-clad stone pub epitomises the best of modern interior design, from the beautifully crafted furniture to the positioning of the stone ginger beer jars. Even so, farmhouse character remains, from the flagstone floors to the grand open fires and eclectic collection of agricultural artefacts. Like other inns belonging to Mr White, it offers The Governor ale, named after the celebrity chef's family greyhound, and a carefully selected worldwide wine list. Dine in the bar, restaurant or peaceful gardens on British and European dishes chosen from a menu that differentiates itself by offering not starters, but hors d'oeuvres, such as Maxim's quail eggs; petit chou farci à l'ancienne (stuffed cabbage); and Wheeler's (of St James's) pea and ham soup. The quality continues with wing of skate with winkles and jus à la Parisienne; Mr Lamb's shepherd's pie; and caramelised honey-roast pork belly with Marco Polo glaze. Accommodation is available.
