The Ship Inn

WEST STOUR, Gillingham, SP8 5RP

Walkers can explore the footpaths, which pass through the picturesque Dorset countryside surrounding this coaching inn built in 1750. The main bar has a traditional flagstone floor, low ceiling and log fire, while the lounge bar has stripped oak floorboards and chunky farmhouse furniture. Both offer a selection of beers and ciders, with weekly-changing guest ales. There's a good variety of sandwiches available at lunchtime - smoked salmon and crayfish being just one. An evening menu includes goats' cheese potato and chive croquettes; mixed seafood platter; aubergine, brie, chicory and red pepper tarte Tatin; and steak, mushroom and Blue Vinny shortcrust-lid pie. Outside there's a suntrap patio and large child-friendly garden. Perhaps time your visit for the beer and cider festival in August.
