Royston Road, WENDENS AMBO, CB11 4JY
First mentioned in 1576 as a farm, evidence of its great age is everywhere, particularly the fine Elizabethan chimney stack. Other attributes include acres of gardens, a willow-edged pond, a woodland walk, play equipment, open fires and a resident ghost. Then there's the traditional country pub food, such as the hugely popular Bell beef and real ale pie; lamb Marrakesh; battered 'catch of the day'; and roasted vegetable and goats' cheese strudel. Cask ales and real ciders are always on tap. Ambo, incidentally, means 'both' in Latin and reflects a 17th-century merging of parishes.
