Holyhead Road, WELLINGTON, TF1 2HA
Although Paul Turpin-Ottley, landlord of this 17th-century former coaching inn, enjoys pasta, curry and Thai food, he doesn't offer them here because, as he says, they're available everywhere. Instead, he prefers an 'informal rustic style' of cookery, which means a wide-ranging menu of simply cooked, seasonal British dishes, sometimes with a European influence. Typically, these include Staffordshire supreme sirloin; Shropshire 'fidget' faggots; classic oxtail hotpot with basil dumplings; beer-battered cod; and split pea and whole-nut cottage pie. Real ales come from Hobsons brewery in Cleobury Mortimer. Walkers exploring this neck of the Shropshire countryside often head for the nearby Wrekin hill.
