WASDALE HEAD, Gosforth, CA20 1EX
Dramatically situated at the foot of England's highest mountain, adjacent to England's smallest church and not far from the deepest lake, this Victorian inn is reputedly the birthplace of British climbing - photographs decorating the oak-panelled walls reflect the passion for this activity. It is also allegedly the home of the World's Biggest Liar, but hopefully that doesn't extend to the menu. Expect local ales and hearty food such as Wasdale Particular (pea and Cumberland ham soup); followed by Wasdale lamb cobbler; or Cumberland sausage. The Wasdale Show on the 2nd Saturday in October is a great reason to hang up the climbing boots for a day and maybe stay over in one of the comfortable bedrooms.
