Wasdale Head Inn

WASDALE HEAD, Gosforth, CA20 1EX

Dramatically situated at the foot of England's highest mountain, adjacent to England's smallest church and not far from the deepest lake, this Victorian inn is reputedly the birthplace of British climbing - photographs decorating the oak-panelled walls reflect the passion for this activity. Ritson's Bar is named after Will Ritson who was awarded the very first title of 'The World's Biggest Liar'. Expect local ales and hearty food such as Cumbrian rarebit or pea and ham soup; followed by fish and chips; lamb stew and dumplings; or salmon burger in teriyaki sauce. The Wasdale Head Show and Shepherd's Meet, which is held on the second Saturday in October, is a great reason to hang up the climbing boots for a day and maybe stay over in one of the comfortable bedrooms.
