The Barley Mow

WALDERTON, Nr Chichester, PO18 9ED

Popular with walkers, cyclists and horse-riders out exploring the Kingley Vale nature reserve, this ivy-clad 18th-century pub was used by the local Home Guard as its HQ in World War II; it's famous locally for its skittle alley. The secluded, stream-bordered garden is a real sun trap, perfect for a pint of Doom Bar; in winter months the log fires crackle. The menu covers the usual favourites such as lightly fried breaded whitebait; chef's mixed grill; sausage and mash; and curry of the day. Look out for jazz suppers every 3rd Tuesday of the month (booking advised).
