The King's Head

Church Street, WADENHOE, Nr Oundle, PE8 5ST

For over 400 years, travellers and locals have been able to drink and eat at this part-thatched, stone-built inn by the River Nene in unspoilt Wadenhoe. The facilities may be modern, but the old-world charm is still there. For instance, sit in the shade of the ancient pollarded willow trees and enjoy the lazy pastime of gongoozling, that is, watch the narrowboats negotiating the nearby lock, not always correctly. The quarry-tiled and bare-boarded bar features heavy oak-beamed ceilings, pine furniture, open log fires and local beers. On the lunchtime menu find sandwiches, pies and home-made burgers and mains such as roast supreme of salmon. In the evening you can feast like a king on pan-fried duck breast; chicken and mushroom pot pie; or goats' cheese and caramelised onion tart. Pub classics include Gloucestershire Old Spots sausages and mash; and scampi, chips and garden peas.
