UPPER ODDINGTON, Moreton-in-Marsh, GL56 0XH
In a conservation village in the Evenlode Valley, this pretty 16th-century inn has been owner-operated for more than a decade. The bar boasts pale polished flagstones, stripped stone walls, oak beams in the ochre ceiling, and a double-sided inglenook fireplace. Well-kept ales, cider and lager from the Cotswold Brewing Company, plenty of wines by the glass and 20 malt whiskies add up to a faultless choice of drinks. After ordering liquid refreshment, take a menu out to the terrace or walled garden for a seat beneath a green parasol. Three courses of classic but imaginative pub food could start with smoked salmon and crayfish, red chard and lemon mayo. Follow perhaps with a popular choice like Gloucester Old Spots sausages with mustard mash; or confit Gressingham duck leg with egg noodles, stir-fry and sweet and sour sauce. Puddings may include a chocolate marquise with meringue, toasted almonds and brandy crème anglaise.
