The Durant Arms

Ashprington, TOTNES, TQ9 7UP

A 1725-built village pub that goes from strength to strength after its relaunch a couple of years ago. The stylish bar 'in all its solid-oak glory' has a wood-burning stove and the original stone-flag floor - here you'll find West Country ales and ciders, and award-winning Luscombe organic soft drinks and wines from Sharpham Vineyard just down the hill (tours are available). Ingredients sourced from in and around Totnes appear on a seasonal menu listing home-cooked dishes such as seared wood pigeon breast, pickled samphire and red wine reduction; mackerel fillets with warm tomato, shallot and potato salad; and grass-fed 8oz sirloin and triple cooked chips. Waving the flag for the desserts section might be sticky toffee and port pudding, toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream; or chocolate and rum marquise with rhubarb sauce. Simple snacks, sandwiches and salads are available at lunchtime. Doors from the dining room lead to a sheltered courtyard.
