Partly owned by Bakewell's Thornbridge Brewery, this former farmhouse once sold beer to navvies building the nearby Totley Tunnel on the Sheffield to Manchester railway. Now a popular seafood- and game-led gastro-pub, it attracts Peak District walkers, whilst dogs and children are made to feel very welcome. Not surprisingly for a pub owned by a brewery, the beer selection is impressive, with four Thornbridge ales on tap as well as a small selection of bottled Belgian beers. Snacks include local black pudding with sticky onion jam; and Huntsman pie with home-made piccalilli. Alternatively, go for roast scallops with risotto of smashed garden peas and squid ink; classic fish pie with buttered greens; lamb shank and lamb mince shepherd's pie; or grilled cod with Niçoise salad. Desserts might include warm treacle tart with clotted cream, or baked 'New York-style' lemon cheesecake with lemon sorbet and griottine cherries.
