Penny Lane, TOTLEY, Sheffield, S17 3AZ
Down a country lane bordered by wooded hills and pastures, this former farmhouse became a pub for the navvies building the nearby Totley railway tunnel in the late 1880s. Walkers and cyclists flock here, while dogs and children are made to feel welcome too. Chef Richard Smith co-runs it with the Thornbridge Brewery in Bakewell, which naturally enough provides the real ales. Richard's kitchen team under Marco Caires produces mixed grill of salmon, sea bass, tiger prawn brochettes, scallops and squid; white bean and chickpea cake with giant couscous and harissa; and a variety of Portuguese dishes, including espetada; Marco's signature dish featuring herby pieces of chargrilled sirloin steak. They also smoke their own fish and meats, and giant feasts are available for groups of eight and over. For a dessert alternative, try a whole-baked Barncliffe Yorkshire Brie — it's enough for two. With three days advance, a feasting menu for a minimum of eight people is available. Summer barbecues are held in the field behind the pub and cricket is played next door.
