TILLINGTON, Petworth, GU28 9AF
This 350-year-old inn's name recalls the day when Household Cavalry horses were rested in the parkland opposite. The tasteful interior features sagging beams, stripped floorboards, open fires (on one of which you can roast chestnuts), antique furnishings, fresh flowers and candles. The fine range of real ales includes nearby Langham brews, and the wine carte will satisfy a serious oenophile. The compact, seasonal menu often incorporates goodies from Sussex hedgerows and seashores. Begin with breaded cod tongues, aļoli, caper berries and lemon. Excellent steaks feature alongside main dishes such as Persian-style pork shoulder and potato curry, onion raita, kachumber salad and parsnip bhaji. Deckchairs, sheepskin-covered benches and even straw bales provide seating in the tree-shaded garden.
