Mullens Pond, THRUXTON, SP11 8EE
There's plenty of old-time, Grade II listed atmosphere in this Test Valley pub, thought to date from around 1450. The spacious bar does its bit for local breweries by offering Romsey's Flack Manor Flack's Double Drop, and King John from Andwell, near Basingstoke. Australian chef-patron Norelle Oberin shows her hand with twice-baked mature cheese soufflé; chorizo and lamb croquettes with saffron mayo; herb-crusted lamb rump, new potatoes, seasonal greens and mint jus; and roast cherry tomato, feta and thyme risotto. For dessert try one of the ice creams or sorbets, or coffee crème brûlèe perhaps. Baguettes and sandwiches are available at lunchtime.
