The Wheatsheaf at Beetham

Run with passion and enthusiasm by the Skelton family, this atmospheric 16th-century former coaching inn stands in the heart of Beetham close to the River Bela. Inside, expect to find wood panelling, low lighting, period pictures and floral displays with the small bar counter screened from the lounge featuring lots of polished wood. Jennings Cumberland Ale heads up the choice of three real ales, while ten wines by the glass span classic European with New World offerings. As far as possible, seasonal menus use the freshest and finest local produce. Lunchtime light meals include hot and cold sandwiches, and simple dishes such as potted shrimps and tomato, rocket and parmesan tart with basil dressing. At dinner, start with chicken liver and garlic pâté with apple marmalade, moving on to minted lamb Henry, or halibut with garlic prawns, lemon and white wine risotto and scallop cream. Finish with rich chocolate pot or sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce.
