TORRIDON, By Achnasheen, IV22 2EY
The island-fringed, azure waters of Loch Torridon and the striking mountains across the water are neighbours to this bustling inn. It makes it a convenient base to walk, mountaineer, kayak or rock climb, but its cosy comfortable atmosphere and good home-cooked food very much appeal to the less active too. Painstakingly converted from old farm buildings, a stable block and buttery, there's a good range of Highlands and Islands beer on tap, often from Cairngorm and An Teallach breweries, supplemented by an annual October beer festival. A cosy interior with wood fires and bright decor as well as an airy conservatory-diner is a restful place to consider a fine Scottish menu, much of it from the West Coast area. Chicken liver pâté with chutney and oatcakes to start perhaps; then plump for venison sausages with bean and chickpea cassoulet; chargrilled pork chop with mustard mash; or perhaps Isle of Ewe smoked hake, kedgeree and poached hen's egg.
