The Royal Oak Paley Street

Littlefield Green, PALEY STREET, SL6 3JN

With a cottagey aspect outside, the interior continues the theme with a distinctly welcoming, nostalgic feel; time-honoured decor and furnishings enhanced by contemporary artwork. Bang up to date is the white pebble and waterfall designer garden, a pleasant, alfresco retreat of shrub and herb planters. The team behind this success story includes former TV chat-show host Sir Michael Parkinson, and his son Nick who brings a wealth of experience to the helm, and having won numerous awards. The head chef sources the best seasonal British produce to create the ever-changing range of dishes such as a starter of smoked herring ravioli, leeks, chilli jam and light curry sauce. Then graduate perhaps to the main event of guinea fowl and ham hock pie and mash with a side order of braised red cabbage and raisins; or Scottish halibut, braised fennel and leeks and sauce bouillabaisse. Definitely leave room for caramel 'snicker', chocolate cremeaux and peanut ice cream. There's ample opportunity to match food and wine, with 25 available by the glass.
