Duke Street, SETTLE, BD24 9DU
Owned by Thwaites and set in the heart of Settle's 17th-century market place, this inn's interior oozes history and atmosphere, with original inglenook fireplaces, wooden floors and a grand staircase lined with pictures that trace the town's history. It's a comfortable base for exploring the Dales or the spectacular Settle to Carlisle railway line. Expect decent cask ales and a classic pub menu offering freshly prepared pub favourites. Typical examples include devilled whitebait; venison cottage pie; the ever popular Settle pudding of beef steak and Wainwright Ale; and one of the deli boards - butcher's or fish maybe. Leave room for banoffee pecan sundae or warm chocolate and hazelnut brownie. There's a beer festival in September.
