The Inn at Penallt

PENALLT, Monmouth, NP25 4SE

Narrow, winding lanes drop steeply from tiny Penallt's trim village green into the River Wye's famous gorge, which strikes along the foot of thick woodlands close to this appealing stone inn. It's very family and dog-friendly and a favourite stop with ramblers on the area's many footpaths. Although there's been a change in ownership here, the business is essentially unaltered; the inn remains packed with promise, both for drinkers seeking beers and ciders made just a few miles away and for diners keen to sample the generous larder of Monmouthshire and the southern Marches. The flagstone-floored bar, with log-burner and pine settles is a restful place to sit and peruse a menu ranging from starters like crayfish tail risotto with roasted garlic and Herefordshire double cream; or straight to a main of pan-roast salmon steak with beurre blanc, fresh asparagus and new potatoes. Seasonal availability is reflected in the choices. There's a popular supper and drink club on Wednesdays, whilst it's the steak and wine supper on Thursdays.
