Fore Road, KIPPEN, FK8 3DT
A traditional white-painted village free house at the foot of the Campsie Hills; views across the Forth Valley to the Highlands are stunning. In the capable hands of owners Mark and Alice Silverwood, this popular and caring inn welcomes all comers, along with their children and dogs. In the winter months you'll be warmed by wood fires and entertained by the locals in the stylish bar. If you're a summer visitor, settle in the pretty garden with a pint from the Fallen Brewing Company or Loch Lomond ales. Menus feature the best of regional and seasonal produce. Beef, pork and lamb all come from Cairnhill farms; chicken from Gartmorn Farm just outside Stirling; wild herbs and mushrooms are foraged from the same estate as the game; and seafood from Scottish waters is fully traceable. Special dietary needs can usually be accommodated; the inn bakes its own gluten and dairy-free bread, and at least one dessert is free of both gluten and dairy too. Children have their own menu, or can be served smaller portions from the carte. The Kippen's sharing boards showcase many of Scotland's natural meat and smoked fish products, such as Great Glen venison salami, hot-smoked Rannoch salmon, Ayrshire Dunlop cheddar, Arbroath smokies (mousse), Perthshire oatcakes and Arran mustard. Main course delights continue with dishes of Shetland mussels in white wine, cream and parsley; beer-battered monkfish tail with hand-cut chips, lemon, tartare sauce and dressed salad; and slow-braised lamb shank with potato purée, baby gem, wild mushrooms, chantenay carrots, salsify and lamb sauce. Finish with ice creams from an award-winning Scottish artisan producer.
