The Inn at Hawnby

This charming 19th-century former drovers' inn is perched on top of a hill and offers panoramic country views of the North Yorkshire Moors. Run by hands-on and welcoming proprietors Kathryn and David Young, the pub stocks some great Yorkshire-brewed ales, including Helmsley Howardian Gold and Timothy Taylor Landlord. In the kitchen, local and seasonal produce steers the menu, with accomplished dishes served either in the Mexborough restaurant or in the cosy bar. Typical of dinner starters might be parsley root and cauliflower soup, pickled pear, croûtons and coriander; or home-cured beetroot salmon, blinis, sour cream and caviar. These may be followed by roast rump of lamb, mint roasted chantenay carrots, heritage beetroots and beetroot gnocchi; or ravioli of spinach and ricotta, English asparagus, avocado oil and dukkah. Finish with carrot cake, toffee and Chantilly cream or banana crème brûlée.
