Pococks Lane, HAWKLEY, GU33 6NE
An inn sign saying 'Free Hoose' owes something to the moose head hanging above one of the fires. It sums up this pub's quirky decor and relaxed atmosphere. With seven beer engines, the pub is well known to local real ale enthusiasts and cider lovers; a festival takes place over June's first weekend. If not eating, you can just enjoy your drink in the garden or on a wooden bench (with cushions) right beside the narrow country lane. Menus change daily, and along with pub classics, proffer the likes of pan-fried sea bass, asparagus, crisp Parma ham and pesto; or pork belly with pea purée, butternut squash and sauté potatoes. These, and the vegetarian specials, are all locally sourced and freshly prepared on the premises, and any dietary need can be catered for.
