Main Street, BURPHAM, Arundel, BN18 9RR
Built in 1736, this popular pub stands opposite the 11th-century parish church, one of whose features is a lepers' window from which the afflicted could watch mass. Head for the bar with its wood-burning stove, safe in the knowledge that Sussex-sourced real ales, soft drinks and even champagne are waiting. The menus are changed daily so there's always something different to try. There's bar snacks such as a hot smoked salmon and crème fraîche sandwich; starters of salt and pepper squid with chilli mayonnaise; and mains that include potato gnocchi with spinach and wild mushroom sauce; mussels in cream, garlic and white wine sauce; house beefburger in a brioche bun with chips; a naked burger with poached egg and salad, or a haloumi burger with guacamole, sweet peppers and sweet potato fries. Puddings and Sussex cheeses tempt too.
