FOXHAM, SN15 4NQ
This compact brick-built inn stands in a rural village close to the resurgent Wiltshire and Berkshire Canal. Real ales from the local Ramsbury brewery flow from the bar, but it's for the excellent cuisine created by Neil Cooper that customers beat a path to the door. The accomplished menu offers an extensive range of dishes from crispy whitebait with lemon and tartare to nibble before a starter of Irish goats' cheese, beetroot and caramelised walnuts; or Dorset snails, noodles and light soy broth. Then for mains, how about sea bass fillet, creamed potato, spinach and creamy white wine sauce; or calves' liver, mash, carrots and red onion gravy? There are equally fulfilling sweets to finish. Accommodation allows diners to rest easy after a classy repast.
