The Crown at Wells

Market Place, WELLS, BA5 2RP

This 15th-century inn overlooks the Market Place and is a stone's throw from the magnificent cathedral and easily spotted by pretty hanging baskets; Penn Barr with tall leaded windows, is named after William Penn, a Quaker who preached from The Crown and who later gave his name to Pennsylvania. Very good pub dishes are offered food-wise in this bar - duck confit with chorizo and pancetta cassoulet being just one. Similar food appears on the Anton's Bistrot menu, but alternative choices include a starter of crayfish salad, aïoli and croûtons, and mains like slow-cooked pork belly marinated in cider and fennel seeds; mushroom and onion Stroganoff; or pan-fried sea bass. There are also 15 en suite bedrooms.
