The Bull at Benenden

The Street, BENENDEN, TN17 4DE

Missing out on 16th-century origins by a whisker - it was built in 1601 - The Bull overlooks the village green and cricket pitch. Hard-to-miss features include the unusual chinoiserie windows, the huge brick inglenook fireplace, the rounded wooden bar, and the antique furniture collection. Dark Star, Harvey's and Larkins breweries man the pumps, with Biddenden's own Bushels cider also ready for duty. The traditional pub menu offers steak and kidney pudding; fresh cod in beer batter; wild rabbit stew; and Mrs Bull's home-made pies and suet puddings "with a top, bottom and side". Mr Bull lends his name to a range of burgers, including Moroccan spiced lamb; chickpea and bean; and American beef with Monterey Jack cheese. For children there's wholetail scampi, home-cooked ham with free-range eggs, and pasta pomodoro. Colouring pens and paper, and high chairs are also provided (for kids, that is). Outside is a 'secret' garden.
