The Bull at Benenden

The Street, BENENDEN, TN17 4DE

Overlooking the green in a lovely Wealden village, home of a famous girls' school, the early 17th-century Bull was built around a huge chimney. Other noteworthy architectural features include chinoiserie windows, an enormous brick inglenook fireplace and a rounded wooden bar - no wonder the antique furniture looks so at home. Guest ales join Larkins from Kent and Dark Star and Harvey's from Sussex, with Biddenden-brewed Bushels cider on tap. Sandwiches, ploughman's and sharing platters head the traditional pub-grub menu, on which you'll also find home-cooked ham with two free-range eggs; beer-battered haddock and chips; 'Mr Bull's' burgers; and daily specials such as wild mushroom and goats' cheese millefeuille. Don't overlook the selection of filo and shortcrust pastry pies, and suet puddings. For children there's wholetail scampi, chipolatas with mash and vegetables, and pasta, as well as colouring pens and paper, and high chairs. Outside is a 'secret' garden.
