High Road, SWILLAND, Ipswich, IP6 9LR
The delightful sight of several firkins of East Anglian beer stillaged enticingly behind the bar welcomes drinkers to this 400-year-old free house in the Suffolk countryside. Diners, too, relish the prospect of indulging in home-cooked specials such as Suffolk fish pie with salmon, cod, haddock and prawns; or slow-roasted breast of lamb with lamb croquettes and redcurrant gravy. In times gone by the pub was reputedly a staging post for the dispatch of convicts to Australia, and the records at Ipswich Assizes do indeed show that a previous landlord was deported for stealing two ducks and a pig. Today's guests are able to linger longer in the colourful, cottagey interior or the fragrant rose garden here.
