Altrincham Road, STYAL, SK9 4JE
Styal's history is closely bound to that of the local cotton industry; many of the Ship's customers call in after visiting nearby Quarry Bank Mill. The 350-year-old building was once a shippon, an ancient term for a farm's cattle shed; it became a pub when the farmer owner started brewing for the locals. Happily, craft ales are still high in the pub's attractions, with Weetwood Cheshire Cat and Big Tree Bitter by Dunham Massey usually among the five on offer. There's something for everyone on the menu, with traditional favourites often given a creative spin. Children have their own selection, and are welcome until 8pm. There's a beer festival in the summer.
