STOW BARDOLPH, King's Lynn, PE34 3HT
Peacocks and hens roam the garden of this ivy-clad pub. It was named after the Hare family, who purchased Stow Bardolph estate in 1553 and still play an important part locally. The fascinating memorabilia that Trish and David McManus have collected during four decades here are on display throughout the music-free, L-shaped bar, where two guest ales partner those of Greene King. There's plenty to contemplate on the menu, so take your time in choosing between, perhaps pigeon breast with black pudding or shell-on Greenland prawns with garlic mayo for starters, or, as a main, between local Old English sausages and mash and, say, beef lasagne. Another good read is the daily specials menu, featuring grilled sardines; camembert to share; pork and prune casserole; and venison Wellington. Vegetarian eyes will spot spicy bean and carrot patties; mushroom and three cheese lasagne; and the haloumi and roast vegetable burger.
