82-86 Norwich Road, STOKE HOLY CROSS, Norwich, NR14 8QJ
Set in a village just far enough out of Norwich to enjoy tranquillity, The Wildebeest is a haven of refined eating and drinking. The interior is a feast in itself, rich with beams, aged floorboards, solid wood tables and dark ochre leather-clad dining chairs. The pub's reputation for fine food has been built over many years, and continues today in the hands of chef-patron Daniel Smith. Settle on a bar stool for a pint of Adnams Southwold or Greene King Abbot Ale; or select a wine from the dozen sold by the glass while perusing the menu. Land on a nearby farm is given over to the cultivation of much of the kitchen's seasonal produce. The Norfolk coast sees deliveries of Brancaster mussels and diver-caught scallops. A typical main course is Dijon-roasted loin of lamb with crispy lamb breast, charred fillet, fondant potato, smoked garlic purée and braised red cabbage. Finish with a lemon slice and Italian meringue.
