The Green Dragon Inn

Church Road, STOKE FLEMING, nr Dartmouth, TQ6 0PX

Although there has been a building on this site since the 12th century, the first recorded landlord took charge in 1607. Two miles from Dartmouth, opposite the church in the village of Stoke Fleming, this South Hams pub has many seafaring connections and the current landlord has turned the interior into a haven of boating memorabilia, including charts and sailing pictures. Local beers such as Otter slake the thirst of walkers, whilst the great-value menu can satisfy the largest of appetites with venison burger, fish pie or braised oxtail.

We arrived at 1400, and our host, Peter, got to us at the bar at 1403. We had the menu in our hands and he told us that the kitchen closed at 1400 and there was no food. Asked if he could give us just bread slices or a baguette, and he refused saying that he was not prepared to upset his kitchen staff. One of our party said that we had walked for two and a half hours to get to the pub, to which Peter replied, that's not my problem.
